Araceae (Arum) |
The Araceae contains 7 subfamilies, 117 genera and about 3,400 species. They are mostly tropical (with highest diversity in the Neotropics), but some species occur in temperate regions. Aroids are perennial herbs, terrestrial, epiphytic, emergent, or floating. Stems absent. The leaves are alternate or clustered, simple or compound, glabrous, sometimes very large. The inflorescence is a fleshy spike (spadix) partially enveloped by a leaf-like bract (spathe) which may be brightly colored. The flowers are tiny, sessile or embedded in the floral axis. Fruits are berries. The family includes the largest unbranched inflorescence (Amorphophallus titanum), and the smallest flowering plant (Wolffia spp.).
